What Is Cauliflower?

Cauliflower, broccoli, cabbage, kale, Brussels sprouts, and several other less popular kinds are all members of the cruciferous vegetables family, often known as the Brassica oleracea family.

Cauliflower first appeared in Asia many years ago as a mutation on a type of cabbage plant that is no longer considered edible. Around 600 B.C., it became popular as an edible crop in the Mediterranean region, and it is still used in many Italian, Spanish, Turkish, and French cuisines today.

Cauliflower is thought to have arrived in the United States around the mid-16th century. At the time, it was a widely harvested vegetable that was used in a variety of recipes. Today, the vegetable is utilized in practically every cuisine around the world, including Chinese, Japanese, Italian, French, Indian, and American dishes.

Most people just cook and eat the white “head” of cauliflower because the tougher stalk and leaves can cause stomach problems in some people and have a harsher texture.
